* Punjab government considering proposal to make 2.5 foot vertical steel rods compulsory on motorcycles

LAHORE: The Punjab government is considering a proposal to make it compulsory for motorcyclists to attach a thin 2.5-foot vertical steel strip on their vehicles for 15 days as protection from kitestring, sources told Daily Times on Tuesday.
Sources said the Transport Department would submit the proposal to Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi. Sources also said the proposal would include traffic police authority to fine motorcyclists who do not attach the steel strip the same way motorcyclists not wearing helmets were fined. Sources said the Lahore district nazim had brought the proposal to the chief minister’s notice after several Lahoris were killed by kitestring. Punjab Law Minister Basharat Raja said, “Mian Amer Mehmood gave the idea to Elahi, which he approved. If the idea materialises, it will be implemented by the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) and not by the Punjab government. It will be a directive and not a law. However, I don’t know about recent developments.”
